The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain land is home to several nature reserves. This area offers stunning game driving, birding, wildlife photography, and off-road trail experiences. The land is rich in wildlife. Zebra, cheetah, jackal, hyena, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, caracal, eland, elephant, ostrich, impala, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest and many more roam the bush.
Game Drives with Songimvelo Game Reserve
The Songimvelo Nature Reserve comprises 48000 hectares - the largest provincial nature game reserve in Mpumalanga, South Africa - and boasts a high diversity of plant and animal species. The highest known plant diversity for the Mpumalanga Province can be found here.
The landscape ranges from savanna plains to high grassy mountains and rolling hills. The broken landscapes make this reserve one of the most aesthetically attractive areas in the province.
Songimvelo is home to four of the Big Five. This wilderness area is unrivalled for the dramatic scenery of the Barberton (Bulembu) mountains and the deep valleys and gorges that lead into the Komati River Valley. Songimvelo geological systems and archaeological sites often attract international scientists to the region. For many years, the reserve has been an important breeding centre for white rhino.
Visit the Barberton Museum
The nucleus of the museum collection was already established in 1898 when Mr. Otto Elkan donated a collection of, among other things, quartz and other mineral specimens, and natural history curios, which were displayed in the Carnegie Library.
From these humble beginnings the Barberton Museum has grown into a main museum where the geology, mining, Swazi history and the general history of Barberton are displayed, as well as Belhaven and Stopforth House Museums, Fernlea Museum and the Block House.
