The town of Komatipoort came into being in 1887. The name of the town is derived from the Swazi named ‘Komati’ river, meaning literally ‘river of cows’ (or with a uniquely African multiplicity of meaning – ‘hippos’) and the Afrikaans term ‘poort’ meaning valley. There had been little previous temptation for Europeans to settle there as the Lowveld was famously hot, malarial and ridden with wild beasts prone to varying their diets an preying on settlers. Simple greed was, however, all that was needed to overcome whatever reservations such trifles may have caused. The discovery of gold in the Selati region served as impetus to a plan to build a branch line from the main Johannesburg to Lourenço Marques (now Mozambique) line to service the goldfields. Komatipoort was where the mainline would sprout that branch.
